damn! someone used my idea! ok, it's not really my idea. i think we've all seen jane's addiction's "been caught stealin'" video.

YES! it looks like my dream of converting australia into a magical land of dinosaurs is one step closer to becoming reality. excellent!

i have found something that must be read immediately; a list of rather homo-erotic sounding he-man characters. i'm particularly fond of fisto and mantenna. maybe they're gettin' nasty at the snake pit, or cruising behind snake mountain.

i'm surprised sssqueeze didn't make the list. i'm sure him and fisto are now living happily ever after.

so, it seems that time warner cable has deemed it necessary to block file sharing services from its customers. since time warner produces a good amount of the content being shared, it's no mystery as to why they're doing this. couldn't they just block arliss instead? does anybody actually like this show?
click here for a preview of what is undoubtedly the most eagerly anticipated video game since super mario 3. looks like it's time to pre-order, fellas.

mayor wants to ban smoking in bars, yeah yeah yeah. i'm actually kinda torn about this one. i'm sure that my non-smoking friends will enjoy being around me more at bars if i can't light up every five minutes (after five gin and tonics/margaritas/etc i turn into the completely irresponsible human chimney). also, since i only really smoke when i go out drinking (which has become all too frequent, ahem), this could make the last years of my life a little less nasty.

on the other hand, this is new york, dammit. it's supposed to be a bit sleazy and nasty and not good for you. the ability to smoke freely in bars is just one of the many reasons why new york rocks and l.a./san fran don't.
note to self: not all flash cartoons are good.

this is funny, good enough to kick you out of that post lunch slump.
kreblog has a good link to wired's first in a three part series on clear channel.
man, that new white stripes song rocks. same goes for everything i've heard off the new girls against boys. wow, maybe rock will make a comeback. have i mentioned how much ...and you will know us by the trail of dead absolutely rule? take that nickelback!
once a digital alarm clock is soaked with water, it takes upon these strange properties that can only lead one to believe that it's circuits have entered a higher plane of logic. it may begin telling military time, or although it may appear perfectly functional, it may stop telling time at all, deciding that it will be 7:26 for the rest of eternity. unfortunately, unless you've been trepaned you will not be on the same wavelength as your new "smart clock", so don't get really drunk and keep a full glass of water next to your alarm clock, mmmm k?
doesn't this seem extremely unlikely?
well, if you don't know by now, all the hard work paid off and in three years i'll have an mba from nyu. well, ok, there's still three years of hard work to come before that happens. i just hope i make it through while remaining relatively sane. :)

holy cow. they really are buying the whole city.
in a perfect world:
a) no one at work would talk to you until at least 11:30 a.m. on monday mornings.
b) bagels would have very very few calories, and do wonders for your metabolism.
c) checking the balance of my 401k would be a pleasurable experience

remember my post from a couple days ago where i said "right now, we're lucky if whatever good clubs we have left don't get shut down"? i'm sure you do.

by far, my favorite club of all time was a club that once once named "vinyl", which is now known as arc. it was a club that was run with the philosophy that if you weren't there for the music, you were going to be bored out of your skull, because there was no glitz, glamor, or leonardo dicaprio sightseeing to distract you. this is where i had the priviledge of hearing my favorite dj of all time spin for a crowd of dancers like we were just hanging out in his living room. danny fed off of the crowd, the crowd fed off of danny, and as a result the vibe was incredible and the music was light years ahead of what every other dj was doing.

then, other clubs closed, management changed, a new crowd rushed in and the old crowd cowered in the corner in shock. tremendous renovations were done, door policy changed, the price of admission increased, and the club took on a new name. now that we've gotten used to all of that, it's announced that body and soul, a sunday afternoon party that is by far the most respected and popular party in new york city, is leaving arc. apparently it's not profitable enough for the new management, even though the club is packed to the gills every sunday (albeit for a lower door fee than is charged on friday and saturday nights).

to put it plainly, house music sucks in 2002. the hard but soulful, dark but sexy, tribal and techy sound that danny created has spawned thousands of similar sounding records that are at best boring and at worst absolutely depressing. new york, which used to be considered the creative center of house music, has only a couple parties worth the price of admission. it's a music that's found itself too strongly associated with the drug ecstacy, something that's become all too obvious by the zombie nation of kids stumbling about on the dance floors of the city.

i love house music because, when it's done right, it's the most uplifting, emotional, and creative stuff you can find anywhere. which is why this has all become so frustrating. everyone's waiting for something new to happen, even though there's no hope in sight.
i've done a tremendous amount of wonderful things in my life, but the greatest thing by far has been putting a site meter on my blog. i get to see how many people view my page (more than i expected), where they're from (all over the world! yahoo!) and how they got there. seeing how people get to my page brings me tremendous joy sometimes. someone typed in "naked wwe stars" and somehow got me (do you think he was looking for the guy or girl wrestlers?), then yesterday someone found my page by typing "girl ass about back" at msn.com. i rule!

note to self: never, ever, move to liberty, missouri.
i got the nigerian scam letter in my inbox a couple months ago, and all i replied with was "you better not send me any of this garbage ever again." this lady was a bit more cunning and creative, and deserving our first "wbsg hero of the day" award. yo go, girl!

Tuesday, July 16, 2002

there's been some really good songs on woxy lately. i hate to admit it, but i really miss napster and audio galaxy.
well, i'm glad they're finally talking about rebuilding downtown. we really need something to boost some spirits around here, and perhaps more importantly, keep the tourists from gawking at the hole. basically, the economy around here is not going to get much better until we get all of that office space back. maybe they'll build something really nifty in the basement, like a four dimensional roller coaster!

Monday, July 15, 2002

now, this is amazing, a photo album of the old palladium/arena club, which closed just before i entered my hardcore clubbing days, and has since been torn down to make way for new super-duper nyu dorms. sadly, i can't imagine anyone that would invest the time and money into creating such a lavish establishment in this post-giuliani era. right now, we're lucky if whatever good clubs we have left don't get shut down.
okay, now this is something to make you shake your head: devote a web page to begging others to help you out of debt. the sad part is, people seem to be actually sending her money. i don't feel sorry for someone who bit more than they could chew buying one of those god awful burberry handbags ("yay! it's the same boring plad pattern everyone else has!")
wbsg realizes that coming back to work on monday morning.... well, it just plain sucks. so, to brighten your spirits, here's a web page dedicated to new jersey guidos. check the photo gallery, yo!

Wednesday, July 10, 2002

here's something for the investors out there.
here's an interesting article on low-carb diets. while i think the atkins diet is absolutely attrocious, i know that a high carb diet isn't good either. i've noticed over the past few years that i can eat a huge bowl of pasta and not feel full at all, just really thirsty. however, i think the message that needs to be conveyed the most is "everything in moderation". basically we eat too much and do too little. my stomach shrank while i was in spain, and it's made a huge difference since i've come back here (my morning bagel now makes me feel full, while before it hardly made a dent). also, don't forget to eat your veggies! (and no, potatoes don't count)

ever have a classic tv show pop in your head and you begin to obsessively wish that there was a cable network devoted to showing repeats of it? you know you have. this week it's solid gold for me. apparently i'm not the only one with fond memories of this fine, fine show as there's a page dedicated entirely to the solid gold dancers. who do you like better, darcel or pam?

Thursday, July 04, 2002

i'm one of those silly new yorkers who never goes to the theater, but i saw topdog/underdog last night and i enjoyed it very much. maybe it didn't quite live up to all they hype, but mos def was great.
the heat... my god, the heat! i think i'm melting today. ny1 says it's 95 degrees today, but it feels like, i don't know... two thousand degrees. when i went out for brunch today, it became apparent that my street is by far the warmest street in the world. i'm definitely going to the movies today.

rolling stone mag will be changing soon, which really doesn't bother me much, since i haven't bothered to read it in a while anyway. what really pains me is to see the way spin magazine has fallen from grace. what used to be a truly entertaining magazine now tries to convince me that jay-z is the most important artist in music today. wha...evah.
here's a decent article about the whole amtrak thing. i quite like amtrak's northeastern service and i think it would be a shame to lose it. do we really want to have to default to greyhound for mass transit to other cities? ewwww!
this is really cool, mapping nyc bloggers by subway stop. i'm very proud to say that my neighborhood is well represented. go bergen st, woo hoo!!!

shine get! you really gotta wonder how such a phrase would be appealing to the consumerist desires of a foreign country, but hey, if it works, it works.
courtesy of what the f&*k is this; some quotes from irc channels. some of these are pretty good.
now pc owners can enjoy a kick-ass, compact, and oh so stylish mp3 player thanks to xplay.
guilty pleasure of the past week was watching innocent and clueless people get hit by light objects. i was at my niece's high school graduation wednesday when one overly-eager student threw up his cap a few minutes before everyone was supposed to. the cap started flying directly towards another student's head, and when it finally bounced off her cap (the whole thing seemed to unfold in slow motion), watching her expression of "oh my god! what just happened!" was just priceless. then yesterday at the pride parade, some drag queen on one of the floats was throwing out leis to the crowd of onlookers. of course people are jumping and grabbing for these things like they're hundred dollar bills, but one little lei happens to fly over the crowd and hit some guy, in the face, as he's just trying to walk down the sidewalk. am i evil?
today's snapple cap wisdom: the bullfrog is the only animal that never sleeps. so, if you splice bullfrog dna with dinosaur dna, will the resulting clone sleep? ask dr. stupid!

don't listen to beth orton when you're at work and experiencing a post-lunch slump. it's really just not a good idea.
click here folks, your ship has come in. sign up for what will be, without a doubt, a very valuable collector's item some day.

Tuesday, June 25, 2002

each night before i fall asleep, i find myself praying that du rags will soon fall out of fashion. perhaps once a symbol of women's empowerment, now they seem to signify just how much hip hop sucks right now. how is walking around with one of roseanne barr's stockings on your head supposed to make you look tough?
more nivana drama, although since courtney seems to be getting desperate for money, this could actually happen. should i dump my bootlegs on ebay before the box set release?

Monday, June 24, 2002

this has got to be the worst title for a song ever. i mean, c'mon, really.

i hate jumping on the electro bandwagon, but if you don't own felix da housecat's kittenz and thee glitz album, you really must purchase it immediately. it will make washing your dishes fun.

there's something about fried twinkies that seems so wrong but yet so right.

Monday, June 03, 2002

oh dear! i've just looked over my posts from the past month and i seem to be using the same sentences over and over again. i guess i'm just really burnt out between applying to grad schools and working like a dog. luckily, my vacation is now 47 hours away, and hopefull i'll return a sane, rested, and more responsible blogger :)
when i came to america, i saw xanadu, and that's all i wanted to do- rollerskate.

new dj shadow tomorrow, by the way. update: village voice review here.

Thursday, May 30, 2002

oh by the way, hole broke up.
oh joy! man, i was obsessed with that show when it first came out. maybe tnn will flourish into a decent network if it stops being the wrestling/baywatch/star trek channel.

ok ok, i like star trek being on all the time, but wrestling has got to go. and why is the wwf all of a sudden the wwe?

Saturday, May 25, 2002

well, this week marks the one year anniversary for wbsg, and while i can't believe it's a year, i also can't believe that i've pretty much run out of things to say. so with that, i present my top three favorite links of the past year:

3: fabio bloodbath
2: jc penny rocks
1: alf's dad smokes crack

i saw attack of the clones yesterday, and while i have many issues with the film i can't wait to see it again. you really must take a look at this though.

partially inspired by the fact that woxy played "bang and blame", and partially because senora lnotes raved about "imitation of life" (which is indeed a really good song), i pulled out rem's monster last night. it immediately wooshed me back to '94 when i was a sophomore in college. ahhh, 1994; the year i kicked ass at mortal kombat 2 and also the last yeaer i ate meat. coincidence? i think not!
it's ovah fuh me. i just retook the gmat after a just okay first time around and scored a 670/800, which turns out to be in the 89th percentile. i'm not tooting my own horn, i'm just glad it's ovah!

Thursday, May 09, 2002

senor kreblog has turned me on to woxy, kind of a wber without all the nu-metal and raging rhinos. yesterday they played rem's "bang and blame" (when was the last time you heard that on the radio?) and portishead's "mourning air" (when have you ever heard that on the radio?) back to back. i hereby announce woxy to be cooler than a cucumber.

hey, guess what i'm doing right now; drooling. august 6th is way too far away.

Monday, May 06, 2002

i'm really considering discontinuing my hotmail address. after not checking my e-mail since 5:00 friday evening, i came into work this morning greeted by 150 individual pieces of spam. microsoft has made it clear that they actually enjoy the endless spamming of its customers; i get spammed daily by microsoft themselves telling me that by only paying $20 a year, i can increase my account size from two meg to six meg. although i have bulk mail filters set up, countless advertisements for sites containing bestiality, britney spears naked, and the answers to all of my horrible debt problems inundate my inbox, while letters from my friends conspicuously end up in the junk mail folder. remember when checking your e-mail was fun?

Friday, May 03, 2002

you know how you get random songs stuck in your head during your morning shower? they just come out of nowhere and usually you can't stand them, like aeorsmyth's "angel" and pat benatar's "shadows of the night". last week though, it was george michael's "praying for time", so of course i had to go pull out listen without prejudice vol. 1. what a bitter album!

hmmm, a new tron game is coming out. when i was a kid, all i wanted to do was go see tron, but noone would take me to go see it because it got bad reviews. now i am big and tall and i can buy the dvd. look who's laughing now!

maybe i'm just a tool, but i'm going through this wonderful afterglow after seeing last night's wonderful simpsons episode. if you missed it, take a look.

Friday, April 26, 2002

the further removed i become from the gay club scene, the more i'm amazed how people get so caught up in stupid shit like this. i never really understood why a community so wrapped up in prancing around in gucci this and dolce that embraced such a white trash habit. if you needed to get completely wasted to enjoy something, wouldn't it occur to you to try a different passtime?

eek!

five indicators that this is gonna be one real crappy decade:

1) the return of the mullet
2) andrew w.k.
3) andrew w.k.
4) andrew w.k.
5) andrew w.k.

after seeing the newest video from korn (sorry, i can't do that silly backwards k thing they do), i'm convinced these guys deserve some sort of medal. they have succesfully, in less than ten years, released five albums filled with the exact same song. all day i dream about cookie cutters.

Saturday, April 20, 2002

completely slipping under my radar until yesterday, massive attack have released a new track on the blade 2 soundtrack, with mos def on vocals. the limited edition 12" has the superior instrumental version on it, which is but a gorgeously gloomy nod to the current electro revival. eat your heart out miss kittin!

magical spring in the city moment #1: during an unusually brutal downpour of rain during an unusually brutal heat wave in april, i find myself standing under the awning of an indian restaurant waiting for discount kid while none other than michael stipe comes running for shelter under the same awning. he had the cutest little retro twa handbag!

Sunday, April 14, 2002

i finally watched requiem for a dream this weekend, and i have to say i can't recall ever watching a movie that made me feel like i was going to have a heart attack while watching it until this one. the acting, the direction, the musical score, the narrative, everything about this movie is absolutely breathtaking. don't watch this movie with the intention of doing anything afterwards, and call your mother too.

ahhhh, spring has taken over new york and once again, it's reminded me why i love this town so much. there's nothing like feeling that cool refreshing breeze when exiting the subway station, or the odd sense of freedom that you get walking the streets without a coat.

Monday, April 08, 2002

nothing beats the rush of getting a whopping 6 dvd shipment from columbia house. you've waited weeks for it to come, you've run home to check the mailbox everyday and found nothing. then you finally get the package, rip it open, and marvel silently at your new shrinkwrapped posessions. an empty, guilty pleasure for sure, but a good one at that ;)

Wednesday, April 03, 2002

diabolique has a funny story about my hometown this week. it's funny because it's true.

i don't know how this happened; i'm starting to really like system of a down. they used to really annoy me, but their past two singles have been some of the best metal i've heard since trent reznor went electric. their lyrics seem to go beyond the "all this tiiiiiime, that i've waaaaasted" woe is my suburban life that's a bit too popular now, and oh yeah, they know how to rock. i just wish the bassist and guitarist didn't look like such dweebs.

Tuesday, March 26, 2002

if you haven't seen it already, you must check out this sexy ass retro jc penny catalog. hey ladies, get funkay!

Wednesday, March 20, 2002

by the way, you can check out bjork's new video here. *don't watch it at work*

hey, maybe this is why i did so well on the mensa test. while something like state of emergency is really just mindless button-mashing, i was once able to break into my own apartment by applying problem solving skills i had developed from zelda, saving me from a night of sleeping in the hallway. cool, eh?

i'm pretty sure the commercial senor kreblog is referring to features dirty vegas' "days go by" (hydrogen rockers vocal mix). that was an easy one :)

Tuesday, March 19, 2002

hmm, apparently i have a good chance of getting into mensa. do you?

Monday, March 04, 2002

for those that have that song from the six feet under commercial stuck in their heads, it's lamb's "heaven".

“You hear it all the time coming out of the mouths of record executives... 'People are stupid, people are stupid'." -Mos Def

here's a good article about the current state of the music industry.

maybe record companies, in retrospect, will realize that marketing almost exclusively to the tween demographic was a bad idea. maybe they'll realize that while they spent millions on promoting derivative crap like o-town (who are everywhere, but do you think anyone actually knows a song they sing?) people were walking around humming basement jaxx and daft punk, and buying radiohead and gorillaz cd's (music considered too "weird" for the masses). maybe this is just wishful thinking, like hoping portishead will actually release a new cd sometime within the next five years.

here's another article (and while you're there, click on some ads).

Tuesday, February 26, 2002

ever wonder how, like, stuff gets stuck in your head? for the past week or so i've had brand new day from the ending of the wiz stuck in my head. "can you... feel a... brand new day!!!!" perhaps it's my subconscious trying to convince me that i'll do ok on my gmats. don't forget: the volume of a sphere is 4/3 times pi times the radius cubed!!!

i really can't stand the radio, like, really. i hear it about every six months or so when i'm on a road trip, and i hear the same songs from six months prior being played over and over and over again. "modern rock" radio is one long buzzing fridge, top 40 radio is one long star search competition, and hip hop has become all bling bling, no think-ing. if it wasn't for the internet, house and techno would be dominating my listening even more than it does now, so news like this has me kind of upset. why, in the middle of the "information age", with more music available to the public than ever before, does it feel like our ability to make our own choices in what we listen to is being hindered as much as possible?

Friday, February 22, 2002

it's not often that something completely random happens at work that changes your day around. today while getting my morning coffee i passed by something that can only be described as a futuristic go-go dancer cage. what made this thing even stranger is that it had a compaq logo on it. i'm convinced there's a rave going on in the office tonight.

Friday, February 08, 2002

my generation seems to be defined by our unrelenting appetite for nostalgia. today's example: the transformers. these darn things pretty much controlled my life for most of elementary school, and evidently for others, they still do. season one of the original cartoon show is about to be re-released on dvd by rhino, and a whole bunch of people in my age group are about to realize that the show really didn't make any sense. that and the voices get really annoying after a while. they could still kick the go-bots' ass though!!!!

Thursday, February 07, 2002

strange things are afoot on the other side of the globe.

Wednesday, February 06, 2002

kylie minogue's "can't get you out of my head" won't get out of my head. pure catchier than the common cold pop perfection. remember when vanessa sang karaeoke to the "locomotion" on the cosby show?

Thursday, January 31, 2002

ok, i think the blur vs. oasis debate is officially over. i'm sure the gallagher brothers are shakin' in their boots over this. i love blur to death, but doncha think they're kind of an odd choice for something such as this?

Wednesday, January 30, 2002

by the way, can i just say how horrible the experience of having stitches removed is? getting them in is kinda cool, you're anesthetized, so while you know there's a needle going through you, you don't feel a thing. it's kinda like you're dreaming, but you're awake, ya know? the process of having them removed is far less scientific, it seems, and can be summed up in two words; "cut" and "yank". zoinks! they should at least give you a cookie when you're done.

Wednesday, January 23, 2002

ok, so previous postings have given me a bit of a rep as one who absolutely loathes mariah carey. and while that's partially true, i don't quite relish in her recent downward spiral as much as you might think. however, it's news like this that makes me feel that the wbsg blog has awesome magical powers to change the future, and hopefully the following will come true just because they're posted here:

a) pretty much every major pop/fake r&b/commercial hip hop/nu metal star to come to rise in the past five years will have a major nervous breakdown. even o-town. i hope they all go bananas, causing the pixies to get back together, causing the world to be saved.
b) michael eisner will spill his iced coffee on me in the elevator. this will cause him so much sorrow and guilt that he'll quadruple my salary on the spot, and buy me a condo in south beach.
c) george w bush will be a special guest star on the chamber and... oh wait, i'm not sure if i can say that. let's just say somehow ralph nader or al gore end up being president.
d) some lunatic scientist in zimbabwe will genetically clone dinosaurs and they'll take over the entire continent of australia, for no reason, besides the fact that it would be really cool.

Thursday, January 10, 2002

tuesday morning i feel a rumbling in my tummy on the way to work and i go "hmmm, geez, that's odd!" i go to work anyway, but after a couple hours i leave because i feel nauseated.

i spend most of tuesday afternoon with a nauseated stomach and other un-bloggable flu related symptoms. i know i should be drinking lots of water but it just makes me feel worse, and there's no soup in the house that's not cream based so i'm not eating anything at all. discount kid comes home with some soup tuesday evening, and i eat some, shortly after i get real woozy and break out into a cold sweat. i figure that's my fever breaking, and gosh darn it, i'm cured! yay! of course, now discount kid is coming down with the same symptoms as me.

at about 2:30 in the morning on wednesday, i get up to go to the bathroom, and i start feeling all woozy and overheated. the last thing i remember is thinking "god, i gotta go sit down somewhere." later i wake up after passing out on the floor, and i've cut my chin open pretty badly (i still don't know how i fell). this leads me to an 8 hour visit at the emergency room, eleven stitches in my chin, and five liters of sodium chloride being i.v.'d into me to help with my dehydration (i couldn't stand for more than ten seconds without my heart rate dropping dangerously low).

this morning i wake up to find out that now my cat has the flu too.

stay away from my house!!!

Tuesday, January 08, 2002

it seems to be the case that dj shadow will be releasing a new album shortly. yahoo! hopefully it'll spark the demise of nu metal and really bad hip hop.

go nader go!

Friday, December 14, 2001

i think i've figured out mtv and vh1's marketing strategy (yes, i know they're the same company). they know people want to see videos, that's why they don't show them, and if they do it's the most banal music imaginable. vh1 shows nothing besides behind the music and now apparently "movies that rock". mtv shows the same real world episodes (which i really am not feeling this season) over and over and over, and spends half an hour showing you how they make the video. this creates a demand for a channel that shows videos, such as mtv2 and vh1 classics. having two extra in-demand channels greatly increases their ad revenue, making viacom even richer with very little effort. ta da!
girl, check this out. the catfight continues.

well, instead of doing any actual work this morning (hey, it's friday, what do you expect?) i've taught myself enough html from here to put a nifty little list of links towards the bottom of my page. my daily lottery fantasies will now be replaced by dreams of a career in web development.

Thursday, December 13, 2001

so, yesterday morning i had my usual "ugghh, i have to get ready for work" frustration. it's not that i hate going to work, i hate getting ready for work. brush teeth, listerine, gargle, shave, don't cut face, try to make sideburns somewhat even, wait for shower to get near desired temperature, wash self, dry self, put contacts in, don't burn eyes while doing so, apply deoderant, apply pomade, try to pick out decent outfit in near-comatose state. you'd think with doing this day after day, i'd have the whole process down to a cool clean 5 minutes, but nooooo. and resultingly, i find myself fantasizing about having a sonic shower like janeway on voyager.

then, while in the shower, i started singing (well, in my head) the banana boat song, but instead of "c'mon mister tally-man, tally me banana" i started singing "c'mon mister taliban, get out of afghanistan", i pretty much had a whole song written in 5 minutes. if mad tv or snl haven't done this already, i'm getting myself a brand spankin' new job.

looks like trigger happy bush had too much fun blowing up caves. somebody please get him a playstation for christmas.

groovetech is now streaming live dj sets from halcyon. check it check it out.

so, it's like december 5th and there are still leaves on the trees in union square park and washington square park. on top of that, i have a very light sweater and a very light jacket on today, upon returning from my lunchtime shopping extravaganza i was sweating. i'm not complaining, but don't you think it's a bit odd? did i mention it's december 5th?
the vice guide to u.s. foreign policy.
